After installing 3D HDTV's in a couple client's homes, we decided to install Samsung's 3D-ready HDTV in our own showroom. If you've seen a recent 3D movie in a theater, you know how much it adds to the experience. You feel more a part of the action, and characters actually seem more real. When you combine the 3D HDTV with a 3D Bluray player and 3D glasses, you can enjoy hyper-realistic viewing right in your living room. It really is something worth talking about! 3D technology creates the illusion of depth in a two-dimensional image by presenting a slightly different view to each eye. Our eyes and brain do this every day, allowing us to see the world around us in 3D. Samsung's new UN55C7000 achieves a similar result by using a special LCD panel that can actually display two different versions of a video image, with the video frames alternating at very high speed.

It's not 3D without the glasses. Samsung's special 3D glasses work in sync with the screen to create three-dimensional images. These liquid-crystal "shutter" glasses alternately block out the left or right lens in coordination with the frames flashing on screen. The glasses communicate wirelessly with the HDTV via infrared beams. It sounds complicated, but it works seamlessly, creating an intensely immersive experience for movies, sports, and video games.

The ultimate 3D viewing experience starts with video material that was filmed or created for 3D. Samsung also offers 3D Blu-ray players, There are a handful of 3D Blu-ray titles available now and much more to come this summer. ESPN, Discovery and DIRECTV® plan to launch 3D channels later this year, so true 3D content is on the way! The Samsung display we've set up in our showroom also has powerful video processing that creates a 3D effect with standard 2D broadcasts, Blu-rays, DVDs and video games.

When you're connected to the Web, there's always something cool to watch
When you connect to your broadband Internet service you can use Samsung's built-in "widgets" to access a variety of free online sites, like YouTube®. And you'll love being able to stream titles from your Netflix® Instant Queue, and order on-demand movies from Blockbuster® and Vudu®. You can even use one of the TV's USB ports to plug in Samsung's wireless adapter for convenient media streaming over your wireless network.

Automated Window Shading

While at the Sony Headquarters in San Diego, we noticed automated window shading from Mecoshade in action. Automated window shades can drastically improve energy consumption in homes or businesses by letting in just the right amount of sunlight and shading direct sunlight more efficiently. Based on the time of day the automated shades operate on their own and adjust to automatic settings. Many clients choose blackout shades for dedicated theater rooms.

Say Goodbye to Analog - Time for HDMI

The custom audio/video installation world is facing yet another transition in connectivity for devices. After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not introduce new hardware with component video outputs supplying more than a standard definition resolution (480 or 576 interlaced signal).

The idea is that all high definition video will be supplied through the HDMI connection.

This transition will clearly cause some discomfort for people who have systems connected with component video cabling. There are a number of potential remedies for people with component only wiring in place. The first choice would be to deploy a set of baluns, which use either two or, later in the year one Category 5e or 6 wire to carry the HDMI signal. Essentially, these devices are stand alone boxes or wall plates, with RJ45 and HDMI jacks for connectivity.

Another alternative is wireless transmission of HDMI, but we all know how wireless can be somewhat unreliable and succeptible to drop off. Especially with a signal such as HDMI which requires so much bandwidth.

Sony invited us to San Diego to take a tour of their headquarters and 2010 product lineup. All Sony HDTV's have been completely redesigned with a very elegant monolithic look. Sony will be making a huge push during the summer of 2010 bringing 3D to the home envioronment. Major networks including Discovery and ESPN will soon be broadcasting in 3D. The next World Cup will also be broadcast in 3D. What do you think of 3D? I sure enjoyed Avatar in 3D and know I'm not the only one that was blown away... not by the plot of course but by the 3D technology and visual imagery! Sony will be supplying active shutter glasses along with the sale of the TV's. I think people will love it or hate it. My own personal feeling is that 3D will be huge for all the gamers out there. Sony is also making a big push in bringing online content and streaming to all their TV's and bluray players i.e. facebook, pandora, youtube, netflix etc. Itouch and Iphones will also serve as remotes for all new Sony bluray players making searches for online content a breeze. Surveillance System Upgrade

Today we worked on upgrading our surveillance system at Liberty Bell Alarm & Home Theater headquarters. We are in the process of going through our 14 camera system and replacing each camera with Speco's new Intesifier series 2 cameras. These cameras allow for superior image quality even at night! We have sucessfully tied in the camera feeds into our Control4 home automation system and record all activity on our DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Many clients are taking advantage of surveillance systems and the new technology available. Several clients have caught burglars in the act and have been able to burn events onto built in DVD drives and/or USB thumb drives. We like to tie in our surveillance systems into our security and home automation systems. Remote login via the internet, iPhone or Blackberry is also available.
